About Kate

Brisbane Contemporary Artist Kate Barry

Kate Barry is a Brisbane based artist with over 25 years graphic design experience in the book publishing industry before returning to the development of her painting practice.

Working as an abstract painter, Kate¹s works are driven by instinctive and emotional responses to landscape and the energy of human interconnection. Her paintings are a physical demonstration of the narration of her imagination and memories. Kate’s works explore feelings of space, pushing and reaching out over the canvas with gestural mark-making. Compositions arise from balancing opposing angles and strokes with the vitality of pattern, colour and layering,

“I get lost in the series of painted marks as they charter a rough course
across the canvas. Painting pulls me between reality and the subconscious.
Visual passages travelled and traces of snatched emotional responses are
left upon the surface. As we pass by we allow ourselves to be drawn in”.

Kate has exhibited her paintings throughout Brisbane, and sold privately and by commission, in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Christchurch.
