Practice Overview
Katherine is a Christchurch-born expressionistic abstraction painter living and working in Brisbane, Meanjin. Katherine’s painting is driven by instinctive and emotional responses to landscape and the energy of human interconnection. Losing herself in a dense subtropical environment through her ritualistic running practice, Katherine's experiences are processed through the artist and shared with viewers via distinct gestural mark making. Sources of inspiration are created with qualities of mystery, sensuousness and nostalgia in an intuitive, spontaneous application of paint. Works explore feelings of space, manipulation and the chance of built-up layers finding a voice on the canvas. Compositions arise from balancing opposing angles and strokes with the vitality of colour and texture. As defiant marks wander the canvas, layers build and textures emerge and animate the painted surface. By immersing the viewer in the rich and fecund terrain of her paintings, a synchronicity between nature and organic movement encourages a connection and almost primitive emotional reaction to Katherine's art. As we pass by we allow ourselves to be drawn in.
"My paintings are a physical demonstration of my imagination, memories and conversations. Painting pulls me between reality and the subconscious, as I get lost in the series of painted marks chartering a rough course across the canvas. Visual passages travelled and traces of snatched emotional responses are left upon the surface”.
After a hefty 25 years graphic design and illustration experience in the book publishing industry, Katherine returned to her abstract painting practice 9 years ago and has achieved successes, being recognised multiple times as a finalist in the Clayton Utz Prize, The Lethbridge 20,000 and Lethbridge Landscape Prize 2021 and 2022, The Milburn Landscape Prize, The Hawkesbury Art Prize 2023 WINNER and Brisbane Contemporary Art Prize, among others. Katherine has held solo and group shows throughout Brisbane and sold privately and by commission, in Melbourne, Sydney, USA, Spain, Netherlands, Auckland and Christchurch. She has exhibited extensively at The Side Gallery, Qld 4059, NERAM The New England Regional Art Museum, Armidale NSW 2350, The Red Hill Gallery, Qld 4059, The Third Quarter Gallery, Qld 4000, Bundaberg Regional Gallery, Central Qld 4670, Perigian Gallery, Qld 4573 and Traffic Jam Galleries,Neutral Bay, and Mosman, Sydney NSW 2088. Katherine’s paintings have been stocked since 2017 and sell consistently through The Modern Furniture Stores, Brisbane and Noosa, Qld, Sydney NSW, and Melbourne, Vic and Canberra, ACT. ABC television featured 6 of Katherine's paintings in the Internationally aired Crime Drama Harrow, Seasons 1 and 2, 2018 - 2019.
